Casablanca Hammam: What to Expect

A traditional Moroccan hammam is a steam bath, deep scrub, and massage rolled into one. Expect to be in a series of warm, tiled rooms starting with dry heat then moving into hotter steam. An attendant will douse you with buckets of warm water, give you a vigorous black-soap scrub that removes layers of dead skin, rinse you, and finish with a massage. It’s not a quiet spa — there’s often chatting and splashing — but it’s genuinely invigorating. Locals go weekly; travelers usually do it once. The whole process takes 60–90 minutes.

Best time is October to April when it’s cooler outside; the contrast feels amazing after the steam. In summer it can feel too intense. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD for a basic hammam + scrub + massage package in a decent traditional place. The very cheapest options (under 200 MAD) are often too basic or crowded for first-timers. Private or higher-end versions with transfers push 700–900 MAD.

Pick a place that offers traditional black soap (beldi) and a kessa glove scrub — that’s the part worth doing. Skip fancy add-ons like facial masks or aromatherapy oils unless you really want them; they rarely impress. Bring your own underwear or disposable ones are usually provided. Go slightly hungry and drink plenty of water afterward. It’s one of the most authentic things you can do in Casablanca if you’re not shy about being naked around strangers of the same sex.
