Huacachina Desert Tour from Lima: Worth It?

A Huacachina tour from Lima is a long but very doable day trip that takes you about 4–5 hours south into the desert. You’ll usually combine it with Paracas: first a boat ride to see sea lions and birds on the Ballestas Islands, then continue to the oasis of Huacachina. There you get on buggies for high-speed dune bashing and sandboarding down massive dunes. The sunset over the desert can be spectacular if the sky is clear. Expect a packed 14–18 hour day with a lot of driving. It’s touristy, loud, and fun in a theme-park kind of way rather than a serene desert experience.

Best time is the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) when it’s less hot and crowds are thinner. December–March is peak summer and very busy. Expect to pay around $110–$160 per person for a decent group tour from Lima that includes transport, boat trip, buggy ride, and sandboarding. Private tours start noticeably higher.

Tip: Choose the version that includes both Paracas and Huacachina if you want variety; pure Huacachina-only tours feel a bit thin for the long drive. Skip the vineyard stop if your tour offers it — it’s usually rushed and not worth the time. Bring a buff or scarf; the sand gets everywhere.
