Manly Ferry and Walk: Worth Doing?

The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is one of the best short boat trips in Sydney. Expect a pleasant 20-30 minute ride across the harbour with decent views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Once in Manly, the real highlight is the coastal walk to Spit Bridge or the shorter Shelly Beach loop. It’s mostly easy walking on good paths with ocean views, some bushland, and swimming spots along the way. The whole experience takes 3-5 hours depending on how far you go and how many times you stop for photos or a swim. It’s relaxed rather than adventurous.

Best time is spring (Sep-Nov) or autumn (Mar-May) when it’s warm but not brutally hot. Summer weekends get crowded on the ferry and at the beaches. Winter is fine if you don’t mind cooler water and shorter days. Expect to pay around $15-25 for return ferry transport using an Opal card. If you add a sit-down lunch and a couple of coffees, budget $60-100 per person total for a comfortable half-day.

Honest tips: Do the walk from Manly towards the Spit and turn around at the halfway lookout – it gives the best views without overcommitting. Skip the main tourist strip in Manly if you want peace; head straight to the coastal path instead. Bring water, sunscreen, and swimmers. The walk is exposed so it gets hot in summer.
