Is the Manly Ferry Worth It?

A Sydney ferry to Manly is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable harbour experiences you can have. Expect a breezy 20-30 minute ride across the water with constant views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the heads. The return trip gives you two completely different perspectives: sparkling city views outbound, then a dramatic entrance through the sandstone cliffs on the way back. It's genuinely fun, especially on a sunny day when the harbour is choppy and the boat bounces a bit. You won't get seasick on the fast ferries but you will feel the swell.

The best time is spring or autumn when the light is good and temperatures are comfortable. Summer weekends get very crowded with day-trippers. Expect to pay around $10-18 each way depending on whether you take the regular public ferry or the faster private one. A return ticket is almost always the sensible choice. Go early in the day for fewer people and better light for photos.

Pick the fast ferry if you want the full thrill and shorter travel time; the public ferry is fine but slower and more crowded. Skip the overpriced harbour cruise packages that include the ferry – just buy a return ticket and walk around Manly for a couple of hours. Bring sunglasses, a light jacket, and don't stand at the very back if you don't like diesel smell.
