Museum of Science and Industry Chicago: Worth It?

Expect a massive, hands-on museum packed with real planes, submarines, trains, and hundreds of interactive stations that actually work. It's one of the few museums where kids and adults stay equally engaged for a full day. The place is huge; you'll easily walk 4-5 miles if you try to see everything. Permanent exhibits are strong on physics, biology, transportation, and technology with a few genuinely impressive large-scale artifacts like a captured German U-boat. The optional add-ons (dome theater film, coal mine tour, or motion simulator) vary in quality; most people say the coal mine experience is the most unique of the three.

Best time is weekdays in spring or fall. Summers are crowded with school groups and the wait for popular exhibits can exceed an hour. Plan on 5-7 hours if you want to do it properly. Expect to pay around $40-65 per adult including one add-on experience; families of four usually land between $140-220 total once you add parking or transit and food.

Smart move: start on the upper floors and work your way down. Honest tip: pick the coal mine tour if you only choose one add-on; skip the motion simulator unless your kids are really into rides. Bring snacks. The on-site food is overpriced and average.
