A national park boat tour from Liberia is one of the better day trips in the Guanacaste area if you want to see wildlife without driving hours. Expect a 3-hour guided trip on a covered pontoon-style boat, moving slowly along rivers or through wetlands. You’ll spot crocodiles, howler monkeys, iguanas, and a ridiculous number of birds — especially herons, egrets, and kingfishers. The guides are usually good at pointing things out, but it’s not a thrill ride; it’s calm, sometimes hot, and very focused on observation. Palo Verde National Park is the classic bird-watching choice. The Tenorio River option feels more like rainforest river travel.

Best time is December to March during the dry season — water levels are lower, animals concentrate near the rivers, and you’re far less likely to get rained on. June to November is greener but much wetter and harder to spot wildlife. Expect to pay around $85–$130 per person including transport from Liberia-area hotels, snacks or lunch, and the guide. Tours that include pickup from your hotel and park fees sit at the higher end of that range.

Tip: Choose a morning departure — animals are more active and the light is better for photos. Skip the sunset tours unless you really want to see the evening roosting; the bugs get intense and visibility drops fast. Book at least a couple of weeks ahead in high season.
