Chicago has two main observation decks worth considering: the one in the Willis Tower (Skydeck) and the one in the former Hancock Building (360 Chicago). Both give you sweeping 360-degree views of the city, lake, and surrounding states on clear days. Expect crowds, especially around sunset, security lines similar to an airport, and a somewhat commercial experience with gift shops and photo upsells. The Willis Tower deck sits higher and feels more dramatic with its glass boxes that extend out from the building, while the 360 Chicago deck is lower but often less packed and includes a tilting window experience.

The best time to go is late spring through early fall, ideally on a weekday morning or right after sunset when the light is good but crowds thin out. Winter visits can be stunning with snow but come with wind, cold, and possible visibility issues. Expect to pay around $30–$45 per adult for a basic timed ticket; add $15–25 if you want a fast-track pass or sunset slot. Bundling with a river boat tour often saves a bit.

Honest tip: Pick the Willis Tower if it's your first visit or you want maximum height and those glass ledges. Skip the overpriced "photo packages" and just use your phone. If lines look brutal, switch to the other deck – both deliver the view. Go once, enjoy it, then spend the rest of your time at street level where Chicago really shines.
