Visiting La Scala Opera House in Milan

Expect a surprisingly intimate theater that seats about 2,000, rich red velvet and gold boxes, and a working stage that still hosts a full season. The attached museum is small but dense with costumes, instruments, and portraits of composers who actually worked here. A standard guided tour lasts 45-60 minutes and takes you through the auditorium (when rehearsals allow), backstage areas, and the museum. It feels like stepping into several hundred years of Italian opera history rather than a theme-park attraction. The experience is calm, informative, and genuinely impressive if you enjoy classical music or architecture; it can feel dry if you don’t.

Best time is September to May when the season runs, though the theater is closed to visitors during important rehearsals and performances. Avoid July and August if possible; the city is hot and many tours are limited. Expect to pay around €25-€45 for a standard guided tour including museum entry. Premium options that get you onto the stage or include a quick backstage look run €60-€90. Book at least a few days ahead in high season.

Pick the earliest morning slot you can; crowds are thinner and light is better for photos. Skip the virtual Zoom tour unless you literally cannot travel to Milan; it’s a poor substitute for standing in the hall itself. If you’re on a tight budget, the museum alone is cheaper and still worth 30 minutes of your time.
