The Miraflores Visitor Center lets you stand above one of the busiest locks on the Panama Canal and watch massive ships get lifted or lowered in a matter of minutes. Expect a modern, air-conditioned building with two viewing decks, a small museum explaining how the canal works, a theater that shows a decent documentary, and a gift shop. The actual ship viewing is the main event: if a large vessel is transiting, you'll see it up close for 15-30 minutes. If nothing is scheduled, you'll just be looking at an empty lock. Crowds vary wildly—weekends and cruise-ship days get packed with tour groups.

Best time to visit is the dry season (December to April) when the weather is better for outdoor viewing. Go early morning (first slot after opening) or around 3-4pm when larger ships are more likely to pass. Expect to pay around $15-25 per person for basic entry and observation deck access; add another $30-60 if you join a half-day guided tour that includes transport and a stop in Casco Viejo. Private tours cost noticeably more.
