A private speedboat charter gives you a full day (usually 8 hours) on a fast boat with captain and crew, free to set your own itinerary. Expect to visit 3–4 islands, stop for swimming and snorkeling in clear water, have a decent lunch prepared on board or on a beach, and avoid the crowds that plague the big group tours. The ride itself is fast and can be bumpy if the sea is choppy — don’t plan on reading or napping once you’re moving. Most charters include hotel pickup, soft drinks, snorkel gear, and a basic lunch. You’re basically renting a small floating hotel room with staff for the day.
The best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is usually calmest. May–October can still work but expect rougher rides and occasional rain; many serious travelers avoid the southwest monsoon. Expect to pay around $650–$1,200 for a standard 8-hour private charter for up to 6–8 people. Larger groups or newer/luxury boats push toward the higher end.
Pick trips that head north or to the Similan islands if you want better snorkeling and fewer day-trippers. Skip the super-popular Coral Island (Koh Hey) run — it’s too close, too crowded, and feels like a taxi ride with swimming. Bring your own towels, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof bag; the provided ones are usually basic.
