Rosario Islands Snorkeling from Cartagena: Worth It?

The Rosario Islands snorkeling tour is a full-day boat trip (usually 8am–4:30pm) that takes you out of Cartagena’s busy harbor to a handful of small islands about 45 minutes away. Expect clear but not mind-blowing water, decent snorkeling with plenty of small fish, coral patches, and the occasional turtle. The day includes two or three stops for swimming/snorkeling, time on a beach with rented loungers, and a basic lunch. It’s touristy—there will be other boats and groups—but it’s still the easiest way to get a proper day in the islands without arranging private transport. The boat rides can be bumpy, especially in the afternoon when the wind picks up.

Best time to go is December through April when the water is calmest and visibility is highest. June–November is rainier and the sea is often choppier with lower visibility. Expect to pay around $65–$110 per person depending on whether you choose a small-group tour or the standard larger catamaran. Cheaper options usually mean more people and less time in the water.

Pick the “snorkel-focused” or smaller-group departures that visit fewer islands and spend more time in the water; skip the big party-style 5-island tours that rush you from spot to spot and feel like a floating cattle call. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one—rentals are often old and leaky.
