The displays are well maintained but not world-beating; it's more “nice local aquarium” than “must-see marine park.” The tunnel and penguins are the clear highlights – most people linger there longest.

Best time is weekday mornings right after opening to avoid school groups. Summer (Dec–Feb) is busiest; winter offers quieter visits and cheaper accommodation around town. Expect to pay around NZ$35–55 for a standard adult ticket; family combos and online deals sit at the lower end of that range. Add a few dollars if you want the optional behind-the-scenes tour.

Honest tips: definitely do the shark tunnel and penguin area, but you can safely skip the gift shop and overpriced café – there are better places to eat nearby on the waterfront.
