Should You Do the Sears Tower Glass Ledge?

The glass ledge at Willis Tower (still called Sears Tower by most locals) is a set of transparent boxes that stick out from the 103rd floor, 1,353 feet up. You step in, look straight down between your feet at the street and rooftops below. It's enclosed and safe, but your brain still freaks out a bit. The view is genuinely spectacular on a clear day; on hazy or cloudy days it's mostly gray soup. Expect a lot of tourists, line-ups for the elevators, and a fairly commercial atmosphere with gift shops and photo upsells. The actual ledge time is short, maybe 30-60 seconds per person before the next group rotates in.

Best time is late spring through early fall on a weekday morning right after opening. Summer weekends get packed and the wait can be brutal. Winter offers the clearest air but brutal wind at street level and possible closures if it's too icy. Expect to pay around $35-55 per adult depending on whether you buy standard timed tickets or go for a skip-the-line option. Kids and seniors get modest discounts.

Honest tips: Get the basic Skydeck ticket with the ledge included; the "fast-track" upgrade is rarely worth the extra money unless you're short on time. Skip the professional photo packages unless you really want a souvenir; your phone through the glass works fine. If you're even slightly afraid of heights, this will trigger it, so don't feel bad bailing at the last second. It's a solid Chicago checkbox but not life-changing.
