Boat Rental in Chicago: What You Should Know

Renting a boat in Chicago is one of the best ways to see the skyline and actually feel the city from the water. Expect a mix of casual rentals (kayaks, small motorboats, sailboats) and larger captained charters. Most people do either a 2–4 hour self-driven pontoon or a skippered cruise. The experience is genuinely relaxing once you clear the harbor — smooth water, great views of the skyscrapers, and a breeze even on hot days. It’s popular, so expect other boats around you, especially on weekends.

The best time is late May through early October. June–August is peak season: warmest water, longest days, but also the most crowded and expensive. Shoulder months (May and September) often give you better weather, fewer people, and slightly lower rates. Expect to pay around $400–$750 for a 2–3 hour private pontoon rental that fits 6–10 people. Smaller kayaks or SUPs run $30–$70 per hour. Full captained charters for larger groups start closer to $800–$1,500 for a half day.

Pick a mid-sized pontoon or deck boat if you want easy handling and space to relax with friends. Skip the big party barges unless you actually want loud music and a crowd — they’re more floating nightclub than relaxing boat ride. One solid tip: go in the morning if you can. The lake is calmer, the light is better for photos, and you’ll avoid the afternoon wind that often picks up on Lake Michigan.
