Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: Worth It?

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi lets you watch baby elephants that have been rescued from the wild being bottle-fed and playing in the mud. You get one hour with them, usually starting at 11am, in a simple outdoor area where keepers introduce each orphan and explain their stories. It’s genuinely moving if you like elephants, but it’s not a safari – expect a crowd of tourists standing behind a rope, phones out. The experience is short and focused: one hour of viewing, then you leave. Many people combine it with Nairobi National Park or the Giraffe Centre in the same day.

Best time to visit is the dry season (June to October or January to March) when the elephants are more active and the ground isn’t a muddy mess. Expect to pay around $50–90 per person for a half-day tour including hotel pickup; pure entry is cheaper but getting there independently is a hassle. Full-day combo tours that add the national park usually land in the $80–150 range depending on group size and vehicle.

Tip: Go only for the 11am public visit – skip the “foster parent” private morning session unless you’ve actually adopted an elephant; it’s not worth the big markup for most travelers. Pair it with Nairobi National Park in the afternoon if you want to see animals in a more natural setting. The orphanage itself is worthwhile once, especially for families, but it’s touristy and repetitive if you’ve seen it before.
