Stand Up Paddleboarding in Cape Town: What You Need to Know

Expect calm, flat water sessions with Table Mountain looming behind you and seabirds overhead. Most outings happen on the protected waters of the V&A Waterfront or nearby bays like Clifton and Camps Bay. You'll get a quick lesson, then paddle for 60–90 minutes. It's beginner-friendly but still a proper workout for your core and balance. The water is cold year-round (13–18°C), so you’ll wear a wetsuit even in summer. The experience is more relaxed than surfing but feels surprisingly exposed when the wind picks up.

The best time is December to March when the southeaster wind is lighter in the mornings. Avoid afternoons from November to February unless you enjoy being blown across the bay. Shoulder months (April/May and September/October) can be excellent if you start early. Expect to pay around R650–R950 for a guided session including board, wetsuit, and instruction. Longer tours or sunrise/sunset options sit at the higher end.

Pick a small-group lesson with a proper instructor if it’s your first time — the difference in safety and fun is huge. Skip the big generic “harbour tours” that mix paddleboarding with too many tourists on giant boards; they tend to feel chaotic. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes — everything else is provided.
