Marrakesh Sunset Rooftop Guide

A Marrakesh rooftop sunset usually means heading up to a terrace overlooking the Medina, Koutoubia Mosque, or Atlas Mountains as the call to prayer echoes and the sky turns orange. Expect a relaxed, slightly touristy scene: low tables, cushions, mint tea or cocktails, and a mix of couples, small groups, and solo travelers. The atmosphere is calm rather than wild. Food, when included, is typically decent Moroccan mezze or a set menu – tajine, couscous, pastilla – but it’s rarely the best meal you’ll have in the city. The real draw is the view and the golden light, which lasts about 30-40 minutes before it gets dark and cooler.

Best time is March to May or September to early November when days are warm but evenings pleasant. Avoid July and August – rooftops stay hot well after sunset and the haze can dull the views. Expect to pay around $25–55 per person for a basic sunset drink and snacks; $70–110 if it includes a proper dinner with alcohol. Non-alcoholic versions are usually 30-40% cheaper.

Pick a spot with a clear western view of the Atlas if possible and go for drinks-plus-light-bites rather than a full dinner – the food is often average while the sunset is not. Skip anything advertised as “romantic” or “VIP” if you’re on a budget; most rooftops are pleasant enough without the markup. Book for the earlier sitting so you’re not rushed once the sun drops.
