Whale Watching in Maui: What You Need to Know

From December through early April, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters around Maui to breed and calve. You can expect to see mothers with calves, breaching, tail slaps, and occasional close passes. Trips usually last 2–3 hours. The boats range from large catamarans with 40+ people to small rigid-hulled inflatables with just six guests. Morning tours are generally smoother and the light is better for photos, but whales are active all day. seas can get choppy, especially in the channel between Maui and Molokai, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, take that into account.

Expect to pay around $80–$150 per adult depending on boat size and whether snacks or lunch are included; kids are usually a bit less. Small-boat tours cost more but give you far better maneuverability and viewing angles. Skip the cheapest crowded party boats if you actually want to hear the naturalist and get good photos. Bring binoculars, a light jacket, and reef-safe sunscreen. If the weather forecast looks rough, reschedule—whales are hard to enjoy when everyone is throwing up.
