Nairobi National Park gives you the odd experience of watching rhinos, lions, giraffes and zebras graze with the city skyline in the background. Game drives last 3–5 hours and you’ll usually see a decent variety of plains animals plus the occasional black rhino; big cats are present but not guaranteed every trip. It’s not the epic wilderness of the Masai Mara, but it’s convenient if your time in Nairobi is short. Expect dusty roads, other vehicles, and a working landscape rather than untouched bush.
Go during the dry season (June to October or January to February) when animals concentrate around water sources and the grass is shorter. Avoid the long rains (April–May) when tracks get muddy and visibility drops. Expect to pay around $80–150 per person for a half-day trip including transport from central Nairobi, park fees and a driver-guide; full-day excursions or private vehicles push toward the higher end.
Pick a morning departure to beat the heat and the worst of the traffic. Skip the souvenir shops at the entrance and any add-on “orphanage” visits unless you have a genuine interest; they eat into prime wildlife time. Bring binoculars, water, and patience – this is still wild animals, not a zoo.
