What to expect
Your group is let in through the side gate 30 minutes before the public opening, guided by a historian who unpacks the castle's improbable run of owners: Templars, Kings of Majorca and Aragon, then Vauban's French garrison. You walk the ramparts overlooking the bay with nobody else on them, into vaulted chambers usually roped off on the standard route. It ends on the terrace with sweeping views back over the old town and the church's lighthouse-bell tower.
Good to know
Arrange the private early slot directly with the château at least 2 weeks ahead; regular opening is 10am. Wear flat shoes for uneven stone stairs.
