Notre-Dame-des-Anges: The Lighthouse Church, Quietly

A short, unhurried visit to the pink-domed seafront church built on a rock, with its rare Baroque gilded retables and lighthouse bell tower.

What to expect

You step off the beach path into a dim, cool nave dominated by a towering gilded altarpiece, one of the finest Catalan Baroque retables anywhere, carved by Josep Sunyer. The church's bell tower, built on the base of an old harbor lighthouse, is visible from nearly every angle of Collioure and gives the building its odd, wonderful silhouette. A few minutes of quiet here, ideally with the doors open to the sea breeze, says more about this town than any monument.
