Niji-no-Matsubara Pine Forest: A Living National Treasure

Wander one of Japan's three great pine groves, a 5km curve of black pines planted 400 years ago, best experienced slowly and mostly alone.

What to expect

Sandy paths wind beneath thousands of twisted black pines between the sea and rice fields, with the sound of surf just beyond the trees. A private guide can lead you to the Mikaeri no Matsu viewpoint and share the Edo-era history of how the forest was planted to shield farmland from sea winds. Expect very few other visitors even in daylight hours.
