Ouimet Canyon: A Private Sunset Overlook

Visit the sheer 100m-deep gorge of Ouimet Canyon, an arctic-like microclimate tucked into the boreal forest an hour from port, timed for golden-hour light.

What to expect

A boardwalk trail leads through stunted, arctic-tundra vegetation found nowhere else this far south, ending at two viewing platforms cantilevered over the canyon's sheer rock walls. The gorge drops so steeply that ice persists at its base into summer, creating a strange microclimate. It's quiet, short (under an hour round trip), and genuinely dramatic — one of the more surprising landscapes in the region.

Good to know

About 55-60 minutes' drive from the port each way — factor 2.5-3 hours total; go in the low-angle light of late afternoon for the best photos, but watch your return time.
