Glide by private boat into Saco do Mamanguá, a breathtaking 14-kilometre fjord of still, mirror-like water enclosed by vertical Atlantic Forest mountains — Brazil's sole tropical fjord and one of the most strikingly beautiful waterways in South America.
What to expect
Your private motorboat departs Paraty Wharf and heads south along the Costa Verde coastline before entering the narrow mouth of the fjord, where the forest closes in on both sides and the water turns glassy and dark green. You anchor in a secluded cove to swim and kayak, surrounded by primary Atlantic Forest teeming with toucans and howler monkeys. A small traditional fishing village, Pouso da Cajaíba, provides the opportunity to taste local smoked fish and fresh coconut water served by families who have lived here for generations. The return journey in late afternoon bathes the fjord walls in amber light.
Good to know
This is a full-day excursion (approx. seven hours); confirm ship all-aboard time carefully and arrange a 08:00 departure. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for the forest stops, and a dry bag. Cell coverage is minimal inside the fjord — a feature, not a bug. Advance booking essential.
