What to expect
Your guide meets you at the Observatory, a serene research station surrounded by mangroves 25km from Broome, and sets the scene with a brief introduction to the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and the epic journeys these birds have made. Walking the shoreline, telescopes are trained on roosting flocks of Great Knot, Red-necked Stint, and Bar-tailed Godwit — the last of which makes a non-stop 12,000km flight from Alaska. As the tide pushes the birds off the flats, the sky erupts in a coordinated murmuration of shorebirds that is, by any measure, one of nature's great sights. The guide identifies species, explains conservation pressures, and answers every question with infectious expertise.
Good to know
Peak season is August–October when northward migration is underway; visits outside this window still offer rich birdlife. Tours must be pre-booked directly with the Observatory. A 4WD transfer from port to the Observatory (25km of partly unsealed road) should be arranged in advance — ask the Observatory for recommended local transfer operators. Wear neutral colours and bring binoculars if you own them.
