Erik the Red's Brattahlid: Private Viking Estate Walk

Stand on the very ground where Erik the Red built his Norse longhouse in 985 AD. Walk the turf ruins, enter the reconstructed Viking church, and let a specialist archaeologist-guide bring the sagas to life in the fjord silence.

What to expect

Your guide meets you at the landing site and leads you through the excavated longhouse foundations, pausing at each stone wall to recount the Vinland sagas firsthand. The tiny reconstructed church — reputedly the first Christian church in the Americas — is hauntingly evocative at close quarters. Sheep graze between the ruins exactly as they did a thousand years ago. The fjord panorama from the ridge above the farm is a photographic highlight.
