Malol Waterfall Jungle Trek & Hidden Freshwater Plunge

Hack through old-growth rainforest to reach the roaring Air Terjun Malol waterfall, where a curtain of cool freshwater plunges into a jungle pool ringed by ferns and birdsong. One of Misool's most thrilling and least-visited inland secrets.

What to expect

After a scenic boat ride to the trailhead, your village guide leads you along a muddy, canopied trail alive with the calls of endemic birds-of-paradise and the rustle of giant monitor lizards. The roar of Malol grows louder before you emerge, drenched in mist, at the base of a multi-tiered waterfall spilling over moss-covered rock. Wade into the cool, gin-clear pool and let the falls hammer your shoulders — a wild, restorative contrast to a morning at sea. The return trek offers chances to spot rare orchids and hornbills overhead.

Good to know

Wear quick-dry clothing and sturdy water shoes or sandals with grip — the trail is slippery in places. Bring insect repellent and a dry bag for your camera. Allow 4–5 hours for the round trip from the dock including trekking and swimming time. Best attempted in the morning before afternoon rains.
