Private Lagoon Snorkel: Tahanea's Cathedral Bommie & Passes

Slip beneath the glassy surface of Tahanea's untouched lagoon to fin through towering coral bommies swarming with reef sharks, manta rays, and Napoleon wrasse. This is raw, wild French Polynesia at its most pristine — crowds simply do not exist here.

What to expect

Your guide idles a traditional pirogue through Tahanea's luminous aquamarine lagoon to a network of coral bommies that rise cathedral-like from a white sand floor. Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks circle below while rainbow parrotfish and triggerfish dart through every crevice. Surface intervals are spent on powder-white motu sand accessible only by boat. The water clarity regularly exceeds 40 metres — a humbling reminder of how few humans ever visit this atoll.

Good to know

Tahanea has no permanent infrastructure; all charters are arranged through visiting yacht operators or pre-arranged local family guides. Book well ahead via the Pacific Puddle Jump network or onboard concierge. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rashguard, and water shoes for sea urchins. Confirm all-aboard time and allow a 30-minute buffer — lagoon passages can be unpredictable.
