Paddle a sea kayak along Tahanea's glowing inner lagoon rim at first light, when the water is mirror-still and the atoll's palette shifts from deep indigo to electric turquoise. An encounter with the silence of one of Earth's last truly wild atolls.
What to expect
Tenders deliver you to a motu launch point before sunrise, where sea kayaks are already rigged and waiting. You paddle south along the inner rim as the sky ignites in tangerine and rose, casting long reflections across water shallow enough to see every starfish below your hull. Hawksbill turtles surface alongside; the only sounds are your paddle strokes and the distant surf on the outer reef. Your guide pauses at a secluded sandbar for fresh sliced papaya and coconut water before the return crossing.
Good to know
Departures must coincide with first tender ashore — coordinate precise timing with ship's guest services the evening before. Intermediate paddling fitness helpful; the lagoon is calm but sessions cover 8–10 km. Bring a dry bag for camera and phone. Polarised sunglasses are essential for reading the shallow lagoon floor.
