Tahanea's passes funnel nutrient-rich currents that attract sharks, rays, and dense pelagic life — making them among Polynesia's finest freediving venues. A certified local instructor coaches you through breath-hold techniques before you drift the pass alongside the ocean's apex predators.
What to expect
After a 20-minute shore briefing on equalisation and breath-hold relaxation, you ease into the crystalline pass current beside your instructor. Blacktip reef sharks hold station effortlessly in the flow below while giant trevally flash silver in the blue. With each successful breath-hold, you descend deeper into Tahanea's wall of coral, trading the world above for a cathedral of colour and silence. Emerges exhilarated, not exhausted — the hallmark of expert-led freediving.
Good to know
No freediving experience required; the instructor runs a full beginner-friendly orientation. Strong swimmers only — the pass current can be vigorous. Confirm tidal timing with your guide before departure; slack tide windows are brief. Pre-booking essential; this operator runs very limited daily slots.
