What to expect
The farmer poles a flat-bottomed barge to lines of submerged oyster cages, lifting a dripping specimen to show the living animal cradling its iridescent sphere. You watch a live nucleation demonstration and learn to grade orient, lustre, and overtone with your own eyes. Back on the motu platform, a tray of freshly harvested Tahitian black pearls — peacock green, aubergine, silver — is laid out for private selection. No retail markup, no middleman: the price is what the lagoon itself yields.
Good to know
Pearl farm visits are tide and weather dependent; confirm the morning of. Bring a jeweller's loupe if you own one — the farmer will explain how to use it. Cash in XPF preferred; card facilities are limited on the atoll. Allow 90 minutes for the full experience and shopping time.
