Black River Safari from Montego Bay: Worth It?

The Black River Safari is a calm 4-mile boat ride up Jamaica's longest navigable river through the largest wetland area, the Black River Lower Morass. Expect to drift past mangrove tunnels while spotting crocodiles, herons, egrets, and the occasional Jamaican green-and-yellow parrot. The guides are usually knowledgeable locals who point out wildlife and share basic facts about the ecosystem. It's peaceful rather than thrilling—more nature float than adrenaline ride. The whole excursion from Montego Bay typically takes 4–5 hours including transfer time.

Best time is December to April when it's drier and the river level is lower, making crocodiles easier to spot. Rainy season (May–November) brings more birds but also more mosquitoes and the chance of a sudden downpour. Expect to pay around $70–$110 per person from Montego Bay, including transport, boat trip, and a basic bottled water. Private tours or hotel pickups sit at the higher end.

Tip: Choose a small-group boat if possible; larger ones can feel crowded and noisy. Skip the add-on “crocodile farm” or lunch stops unless you specifically want them—most people find the boat ride itself is enough. Bring bug spray, binoculars if you have them, and cash for a tip for the captain.
