Deep Sea Fishing in Montego Bay: What to Know

Expect a half-day or full-day trip on a 30-45ft sportfishing boat heading out past the reefs into water 1,000–3,000ft deep. You’ll troll for marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado, and tuna. The ride out is usually calm once you clear the bay, but it can get choppy if the trade winds are up. Most trips include basic tackle, bottled water, and a cooler with drinks; some add a simple lunch. Catches are often filleted and you can take a few fillets back to your hotel if you want them cooked that night.

Best time is December through April when seas are flatter and billfish are more active. Summer and fall can still be good for tuna and wahoo but expect more afternoon showers and rougher rides. Expect to pay around $450–$850 for a half-day private charter (up to 6 people) and $750–$1,400 for a full day. Shared “open boat” trips run cheaper per person but you give up flexibility on timing and route.

Pick a morning departure so you’re fishing while the fish are feeding and the water is calmer. Skip the cheapest flyers you see on the beach; they often use under-maintained boats and inexperienced captains. Book through a reputable operator with recent reviews, and confirm they supply life jackets and a working radio before you hand over any deposit.
