Lokrum is a small, car-free island 15 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik's old harbor. Expect a peaceful nature reserve covered in pine and olive trees, wandering peacocks, a salty inland lagoon locals call the Dead Sea, and rocky coves for swimming. There's a ruined Benedictine monastery and a small botanical garden, but the main draw is escaping the crowds and heat of the city. It's not a party island; it's quiet, shaded, and best enjoyed slowly. The water is clear but entry is rocky in most places, so bring water shoes.
Go between late May and early October when the boats run frequently. June and September are ideal: warm enough to swim but far fewer day-trippers than July and August. Expect to pay around €25-40 per person total, covering the return boat ticket plus the small nature reserve entry fee. Food and drinks on the island are limited and overpriced, so bring snacks and plenty of water.
Smart move: catch an early boat (first departure around 9am) and head straight to the lagoon or far side coves before the crowds arrive. Skip the overpriced café near the harbor and the paid sunbeds; just pack a towel and find a flat rock. If you're short on time or hate rocky beaches, you can comfortably skip it and stay in town.
