Should You Take the Manly Ferry?

The Manly ferry is one of Sydney's genuinely worthwhile experiences. You get a proper seat on the water with fresh air, passing right under the Harbour Bridge and alongside the Opera House before heading through the Heads into open ocean swell. The trip takes about 30 minutes each way. At Manly you step off into a relaxed beach suburb with a long ocean beach, a quieter cove beach, and decent cafés. It's not a thrill ride but it feels like real transport rather than a tourist trap. Expect a mix of locals commuting and visitors; the ferry can be busy on weekends and during school holidays.

Best time is spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the light is good for photos. Summer is fine but hotter and more crowded; winter can be windy and chilly on the deck. Expect to pay around $10–18 one way depending on whether you use a contactless card or buy a day pass. A return ticket with a few hours ashore usually works out cheapest.

Pick the regular public ferry from Circular Quay rather than a private sightseeing boat – it's cheaper, more frequent, and the views are identical. Sit on the starboard side going over for the best Opera House shots. Skip the overpriced cafés right by the wharf at Manly and walk ten minutes to the ocean beach promenade instead.
