The Martha Brae rafting experience is a calm, low-key float down a peaceful river on a long bamboo raft steered by a local captain. You’ll drift for about 45–60 minutes through lush greenery with very little white water—just gentle currents, birds, and the occasional stop where your guide points out plants or tells a few stories. It’s genuinely relaxing rather than adventurous. The whole activity including transport from Montego Bay usually takes 2.5–3.5 hours. Expect to get a bit wet and sit fairly low on the water. It’s best suited for couples, families with older kids, or anyone who wants a chill break from the beach or excursions that involve a lot of walking.
The best time to go is December through April when it’s drier and slightly cooler. Rainy season (May–November) can make the river higher and the banks muddier, though the trip still runs. Expect to pay around $55–$90 per person including round-trip transport from Montego Bay hotels; private tours for couples or small groups sit at the higher end. Book a morning departure if you can—it’s cooler and you avoid the worst of the afternoon heat.
Honest tip: Choose the standard rafting-only option and skip any add-on “adventure packages” that tack on ziplining or tubing—the river trip itself is the part worth doing. Wear water shoes or sandals that can get wet and bring bug spray for the riverbank waiting area. It’s not the most exciting thing you can do in Jamaica, but it’s one of the most peaceful.
