Paddleboarding in Montego Bay: What You Should Know

Expect calm, warm water and a mix of relaxed drifting and light exercise. Most tours launch from the calmer northern side of the bay or near the major hotels. You'll paddle along the coastline, sometimes stopping to snorkel in shallow reefs. The water is usually flat unless the wind picks up in the afternoon. It's suitable for beginners but you'll still get a decent core workout. Tours typically last 1.5 to 2.5 hours including transport and gear briefing.

The best time is December to April when the sea is flattest and winds are lighter. Avoid mid-summer afternoons if possible – the combination of heat, glare, and afternoon breezes can make it tiring. Expect to pay around $45–$85 per person depending on whether it's a basic sunset paddle or a longer morning tour with snorkeling and hotel pickup. Group sizes usually range from 6 to 12 people.

Pick a morning tour if you want calmer conditions and better energy. Skip the large-party booze-cruise versions that combine paddleboarding with open-bar parties afterward – they tend to rush the actual paddling. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof bag for your phone. If you're staying at a resort, check whether they run their own trips; they’re often simpler than heading into town to join a third-party group.
