Second City is the classic Chicago improv and sketch comedy experience. Expect a mix of fast-paced sketch scenes and audience-driven improv, performed in an intimate theater where you’re close enough to see the actors sweat. The mainstage show is tighter and more polished; the improv sets that follow are looser and hit-or-miss depending on the night and the crowd. It’s funny, occasionally sharp, sometimes dated, but still the clearest living link to the city’s comedy heritage. Shows run about two hours including the improv set.

Best time to go is fall through early spring on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. Summer is hotter, more touristy, and the crowds can be rowdier.
