Ski touring in the Queenstown area means earning your turns with skins on your skis or splitboard, then descending through steep, untracked snow in the Remarkables or surrounding backcountry ranges. Expect a full-day physical commitment: 4–6 hours of climbing, variable snow quality, and genuine alpine exposure. Guides handle the avalanche forecasting and route finding, but you still need to be fit and comfortable on steep skin tracks and variable descents. The views are huge and the crowds are almost nonexistent compared with resort skiing, but it’s not a relaxed sightseeing trip.
The best time is mid-June to late September, with July–August offering the most reliable snow cover. Expect to pay around NZ$450–750 per person for a full-day guided tour including transport, safety gear, and lunch. Solo travelers or those without backcountry experience should book a group tour; experienced skinners can sometimes arrange private days for significantly more.
Tip: Choose a “intro to ski touring” or “bunny hill to backcountry” style day if you’re new to earning turns — the standard “advanced” tours move fast and assume you can handle skinning up 800–1000 vertical meters without slowing everyone down. Skip trying to combine this with a big night out in Queenstown the evening before; you’ll feel it the next day.
