You sit on a long bamboo raft poled slowly down the calm Great River while a local guide gives you a limestone massage. The “limestone” part is real river rocks, usually heated and used to rub your feet, shoulders, or whole back while the raft drifts. The trip lasts about 3–4 hours including a short river swim stop and a basic lunch. It’s genuinely relaxing once you get past the initial weirdness of having a stranger rub hot stones on you while floating. The river is peaceful, the scenery is green and quiet, and the guides are usually relaxed and knowledgeable. It’s not white-water rafting; expect a gentle, slightly touristy experience rather than an adventure.
Best time is December to April when the river is clearer and rain is less likely. July–November can be buggy and the water murkier after rains. Expect to pay around $130–$190 per person including transport from Montego Bay hotels, the massage, and lunch. The foot-massage upgrade is usually enough; skip the full-body treatment unless you’re very comfortable being massaged in swimwear on an open raft. Pick an afternoon departure so you’re not rushing in the morning heat. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof bag for your phone, and a change of clothes for the ride back.
