Dubrovnik Islands Boat Trip: Worth It?

A typical islands boat trip from Dubrovnik takes you to the Elaphiti islands just north of the city. Expect 4–8 hours on the water with stops for swimming, a bit of beach time, and usually a meal or drinks on board. The scenery is classic Dalmatian—steep rocky islands, pine trees, and clear blue water. It’s relaxing if you like being on a boat, but it can feel long and crowded in peak season when dozens of vessels follow similar routes. The better trips give you decent swimming time and avoid the worst of the tour groups; the worse ones rush you and spend too much time motoring.

Best time is late May–June or September–early October. July and August are hot, crowded, and more expensive. Expect to pay around $45–65 for a standard group tour with lunch and drinks. Private speedboat trips for 2–6 people run roughly $350–550 for a half-day, which works out much better value if you split it. Skip the cheapest big-party boats that blast music and herd you like cattle. Pick either a small-group sailing trip or a private speedboat if your budget allows—you’ll actually enjoy the islands instead of just ticking them off a list.
